“God wants only what is for your good and joy.” Rule - On Poverty

Trusting in God and God’s providence is one of the hardest things we are asked to do. As human beings, we like to be in control of all that affects us. We think - who knows better what we need and what we want than ourselves! Yet it has been made clear to us that there is a difference between what we WANT and what we NEED.

When we pray for something for ourselves or for someone else, we have learned quickly, and often with disappointment, that we don’t always get what we ask for. Sometimes what we ask for comes to us in a way we least expected. Maybe we think God is playing games with us.

Actually, our God knows better what it is we need and when we need it. We pray for something that we want NOW, but it becomes obvious that now isn’t the time. That’s another thing we have learned. Timing is everything.

So what is St. Angela trying to tell us? I think she wants us to rely more on God than on ourselves. I believe that God is not denying us or punishing us by not giving us what we want when we want it, but that maybe the timing isn’t right or that God is trying to help us learn what it means to trust and have a deeper faith, as well as learning patience. St. Angela knew the strength and courage within her, yet she also knew God’s grace that nourished this very spirit.

Trust in God: Life and Joy will come to us in time. Again, Angela says, “Be ready for big surprises.”

To complete a task with the same zeal and spirit with which we started seems almost impossible. Yet we can take a deep breath and ask God to fill our minds, bodies, and spirit with the desire to persevere and bring to completion what we began.

In the introduction to her Counsels, St. Angela addresses the local leaders of her Company. She first asks them to pray for guidance so that they may be faithful to their responsibilities and do what it is they need to do out of love.

This Lent, place yourself in Mary’s position of holding her child in her arms so lovingly. Jesus and his mother surely had a bond that was special and beautiful. Allow this Lent to teach you the beauty of holding on and letting go.

When I think of something always burning, my first thoughts go to Moses and the burning bush. The bush is all-consuming, yet it is never destroyed by the burning fire. I believe this is what St. Angela is implying when it comes to charity.

January is about the beginning of another year, resolutions, starting over, promises, new goals, new life, new hopes and dreams, a better tomorrow, deeper faith, finding God, and the list goes on.
