Performing Arts

SUA’s winter musical is one of the most anticipated events of the school year. Each large-scale production involves more than 80 high school students, including actors on stage to backstage crew to tech assistants. The productions include large dance numbers, incredible music, and outstanding sets. 

Boys from area high schools participate, with eight to 10 area high schools represented each musical. 

SUA musicals are performed at The Valentine Theatre in downtown Toledo, a historic 900-seat auditorium. 

From opening night to the final performance, the SUA musicals bring energy, musicality, and talent to the stage, delighting audiences year after year.  

In addition to a winter musical, the Performing Arts department also puts on spring plays. 

SUA high school students perform their plays in the Black Box Theater each May. The performances are open to friends, family, and the community. 

The JA also puts on a spring performance in the Black Box Theater. The cast includes students in grades six to eight, with high school sisters helping with some of the technical duties, like lighting designer and board operator. 

Students in Performing Arts and Visual Arts showcase their talents and creativity during two annual events: the Winter Celebration of the Arts and the Spring Celebration of the Arts.

These showcases celebrate the culmination of each semester’s hard work. Choir students perform a selection of choral works, piano students present individual pieces, JA handbell students take the stage, and the SUA Bella Voce Honors Choir performs.

The Celebration of the Arts provides family, friends, faculty, staff, and the school community with an opportunity to experience and celebrate the accomplishments of students in the Performing and Visual Arts programs.
