The Students In Action program is a component of the national Jefferson Awards organization and facilitated locally by Leadership Toledo. At each school, student leaders are redefining the culture of their campus to one of service, by heightening peer awareness of volunteer opportunities and by bringing attention to ordinary students involved in extraordinary volunteer work. Student leaders have established both selection criteria and the frequency in which Youth Jefferson Awards will be presented to their deserving classmates.
Jefferson Awards for Public Service, a national organization with a long history of recognizing community members for service. They selected Leadership Toledo to assist in the development of a youth component to their “Nobel Prize” for public service. The student-led initiative establishes programs in area high schools that teach youth how to be effective servant leaders, provides a component to recognize youth for outstanding service, and use the profiles of winners to encourage more students to volunteer and become involved in our community.
Each year during our Day of Caring, several Youth Jefferson Awards are presented to St. Ursula students who live out the call to serve, who go above and beyond as they truly embrace what it means to be a servant leader.
St. Ursula Academy’s Youth Jefferson Awards/Students In Action initiative was selected by an esteemed panel of judges to represent the Toledo Region at the National 2013 Jefferson Awards ceremonies in Washington, D.C.
“The decision,” stated Mr. Schlaudecker, executive director of Leadership Toledo, “was extremely difficult yet unanimous for our judges. Their competition video demonstrated that ‘I Will Serve’, are not mere words for the students who attend St. Ursula Academy. Service to others is something they delight in every day - done not as a requirement or obligation but as a joy!
