St. Angela was right on target with the advice to lead by example. Having had parents who loved their children and taught them Christian values and morals, Angela knew well that their lives mirrored their beliefs.

As little children many of us probably remember dressing up like our parents in their clothes because we wanted to imitate them. We also were probably reprimanded for saying “dirty words” we heard our parents say. A popular book “All I Ever Needed to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten” by Robert Fulghum, shows us that children learn early about behavior, relationships and respect. For most children, adults leave a lasting mark on their character.

There needs to be authenticity between what we say and what we do. Children, young and old, listen to what is said and then imitate what they see. As adults, we need to be conscious of what we want our children/students to take away from us regarding character, behavior, relationships and respect of others. It is easy to talk out of both sides of our mouth and therefore we need to listen to what we ourselves are saying.  

Growing up we were taught to think twice before speaking. We never know who will remember what, who will recognize us where, or what impression we make on others. Someone once told me “Remember who you are and what or who you represent.”  

St. Angela gives good, straight advice. Our words and actions need to reflect like a mirror the Christian values of the Gospel. Be true to yourself for others.
