Inside SUA: Kyla Gorey

Kyla Gorey
Visual Arts Faculty

How long have you been a part of the SUA community?
This year will be my fourth at SUA.

What is your position/affiliation to SUA?
I am the Ceramics teacher in the Visual Arts Department.

What are you most proud of being affiliated with SUA?
I am incredibly proud of and consistently impressed by how kind, caring, and supportive our girls are of each other. More often than not, our girls stand up and show up for one another during both big moments and day-to-day small moments in the classroom. I believe this caring mindset is in large part because of the faith-based values and beliefs that our school is built on. I feel very fortunate to work in a place in which faith formation is nurtured and cultivated.

What SUA Core Value is most meaningful to you, and why?
Development of the Whole Person is meaningful to me. When students participate in the visual arts, they can express their spirituality, think deeply to problem-solve, physically move materials to create a desired aesthetic, and navigate their emotions through the practice of creating and critiquing artwork. This process of art-making allows students to connect and investigate these areas of development in away that they otherwise may not be exposed to. The arts are just one of the many paths they may choose to explore!

How she has impacted students:
“Mrs. Gorey is passionate and dedicated, and she works hard to engage her students during her art classes. I enjoyed exploring my creativity in ceramics during my senior year with Mrs. Gorey’s inspirational and free-choice projects. She is an advocate for art and encourages her students to explore their creativity with an open mind. She is always willing to make herself available for her students before, during, and after school. She is an excellent and enthusiastic teacher with clear directions and patience for all learners.

Overall, Mrs. Gorey is kind, and easy to talk to, and her passion for the arts has inspired me to continue with art courses in college.”
