Arrows Making an Impact: Nina Van Tassel ’20

Nina Van Tassel's journey from a high school student at St. Ursula Academy (SUA) to an Equestrian National Champion and member of the Air National Guard reflects the transformative impact of the education and community she experienced at SUA.

Nina's connection to SUA began when she shadowed a family friend, and she immediately felt a strong sense of belonging. "I was seeking an environment that would challenge me academically," Nina recalls, "and it was clear from the pace and rigor of the courses that I had found the right place." She embraced every opportunity, from Student Council and track and field in the Junior Academy to being an ambassador, competing in indoor track, participating on the equestrian team, and playing intramurals. What Nina cherishes most are the friendships she formed at SUA. "The fun and silly moments I shared with so many, including the entire class of 2020, make me look back on those times with so much joy," she shared. These relationships provided a support system that has stayed with her.

After graduating, Nina's journey took an unexpected turn due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She began her studies at The Ohio State University online. During this challenging period, she focused on her equine training and ultimately won an Equestrian National Championship in 2021—a testament to her perseverance and passion.

In January 2022, Nina joined the Air National Guard. For a year, she trained across three different states, gaining valuable experience. Upon her return, she resumed full-time studies at The Ohio State, pursuing a degree in Security and Intelligence with a minor in History.

Nina's achievements have earned her recognition, including the Air and Space Achievement Medal, which she attributes not only to her efforts but to the collective dedication of her unit. She has also achieved the rank of Senior Airman and was honored as Airman of the Year.

In addition to her military work, Nina volunteers with The Ohio State Equestrian Team, giving riding lessons to children and participating in community clean-up and clothing drives.

Nina's story is a powerful example of how the foundation built at St. Ursula Academy can lead to a life of purpose, achievement, and service.
