Maggie Naayers ’09 found herself at a crossroads when it was time to decide between Springfield High School and St. Ursula Academy at the end of her 8th grade year. But the allure of SUA’s outstanding volleyball team was undeniable, and it played a significant role in her decision-making process. She believed that playing volleyball for SUA would open doors to future opportunities, and her intuition proved to be spot on.
Naayers began her volleyball journey, playing all four years at SUA. She started on the junior varsity team and advanced to varsity during her junior and senior years. She also explored her athletic abilities by joining the swim team during her sophomore year. However, what truly stands out for Naayers from her high school experience is the lifelong friendships she formed with her SUA sisters from her teams and classes, who remain close to her to this day.
Upon graduation, she received a volleyball scholarship to the University of Findlay, where she pursued her undergraduate studies. After that, she attended John Carroll University for graduate school. At JCU, she gave back to the sport she loved by coaching the volleyball team for two years, and this experience led to a full scholarship that covered her MBA.
After completing her education at JCU, Naayers joined Sherwin Williams. In 2020, she assumed her current role as the Director of Loss Prevention; she is the first female to hold this position within her department's 155-year history.
Working in a male-dominated industry and a predominantly male-dominated department, Naayers attributes her confidence, leadership skills, and ability to speak up, share ideas, and ask questions to her time at SUA. SUA instilled in her the courage to break barriers and challenge norms, thus contributing to her professional success.
Naayers' story is a shining example of the way a Catholic education rooted in faith and values can pave the way for future success. As she reflects on her journey, Naayers is not only grateful for her enduring friendships, but also for the blessings of a faith-based education that has guided her every step of the way.
