Arrows Making an Impact: Katie McKernan '13

Katie McKernan came to SUA from St. Joseph’s Sylvania. During her time at SUA, Katie actively participated in various activities. A volleyball player all four years, she was involved in Women in Business, contributed to Spirit Club, and held the position of Student Council President in her senior year.

Katie's journey at SUA was greatly influenced by her sister Megan, who graduated in 2010. One of Katie’s fondest memories at SUA centers around winning a sold-out volleyball game against Notre Dame Academy on Senior Night. Celebrating this moment with her best friend and teammate Maddie Burnham remains a cherished memory. Their team clinched the State Championship in 2010 and secured the state runner-up titles in 2011 and 2012.

Following graduation, Katie pursued her education at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. There, she double-majored in Accounting and Studio Art while continuing her volleyball career at the Division 1 level. Katie later transitioned into corporate finance before assuming her current role as a Senior Financial Consultant. She began pursuing her love of art at this time, establishing KatieMcKDesigns and capturing cityscapes in intricate ink carvings.

Katie’s impact extends beyond her professional endeavors. She initiated the heART Linoleum Print Series, aiming to raise funds for scholarship programs at St. Ursula and other Toledo-area high schools. The series also supports Box United, an after-school boxing program for young girls in Chicago. During her time in Dublin, Ohio, Katie coached high school volleyball, sharing her knowledge with young athletes in the community.

Despite relocating four times in the past year and a half, she commemorates each place she has lived through her art, creating ink carvings that serve as poignant reminders of her journey. Katie and her family are delighted to be back in the Toledo area, surrounded by family and friends.

Reflecting on her experiences, Katie acknowledges the significant impact SUA had on her personal growth and development. She attributes her confidence and creativity to the foundation laid at SUA. To her 18-year-old senior self, Katie would convey the message of cherishing the lasting friendships formed at SUA and embracing the opportunities for growth and self-discovery.
