Advanced Placement Courses
Preparing our students for college courses.
At SUA, we’re preparing our students for life beyond high school. We offer 20 Advanced Placement (AP) courses that cover various subjects. These challenging, rigorous classes help prepare students for college coursework and can help them earn college credit at more than 3,000 universities.
SUA is approved by the College Board to offer AP courses in English, mathematics, science, social studies, technology, visual arts, and world languages, providing students with the opportunity to earn college credit. AP courses are weighted as a 5.0 scale.
SUA offers 16 AP courses during the 2026-2027 school year (listed in bold), with 20 syllabi approved through College Board:

AP vs. IB
The AP program offers flexible, college-level courses that emphasize deep subject mastery. The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is a comprehensive, two-year college-level curriculum this is globally recognized.
At SUA, we have carefully considered the strengths of both AP and IB programs. We have chosen to invest in the AP program because it is more widely offered in the United States and accepted by more colleges across the country. As a result, we are committed to ensuring that AP courses are engaging, challenging, and well-supported.
Colleges across the country, including highly selective universities, do not give an edge to either program. Instead, they look to see that student have taken the most rigorous coursework her school offers.
We believe in the powerful impact of our AP Program:
- More students complete AP courses than complete the entire IB program. Students can measure their success and feel pride in meeting their objectives when they achieve a goal.
- Passing an AP test ensures credit at more than 3,000 universities, including all state colleges in Ohio.
- Entering college with multiple credits means a lower tuition bill, more flexibility in class scheduling, and a potential earlier graduation date. A student can use AP credits to fulfill pre-requisites or electives, allowing her to progress faster in her college coursework.
- Students can choose which AP courses to take, based on interest and ability, and focus on subjects she plans to pursue in college.
- SUA offers an array of AP classes, giving students the option of advanced coursework in the areas they choose.
- Some AP classes have a student/teacher ratio as low as 6:1, which allows for individual attention.
- A student who takes AP courses also has the flexibility to enroll in electives, giving her a well-rounded schedule instead of being locked into a fixed IB program.
- Although rigorous and challenging, an AP course schedule at SUA gives students time for extra-curricular activities, ensuring a meaningful and memorable high school experience.
College Credit Plus
In addition to AP classes to earn college credit, SUA also offers College Credit Plus (CCP), which is a state-funded program that allows eligible students to earn both high school and college credit at the same time.
These college level courses count toward high school and college GPAs, and the credits transfer to most Ohio public colleges and universities.
Students can take the classes on campus, online, or sometimes, a hybrid of both. SUA students take CCP at the University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, and Owens Community College.
CCP gives students the opportunity to explore classes not offered at SUA. They can earn between 6-12 college credits.
