4x4 Collegiate Block Schedule

Preparing students for college.

Our 4x4 Collegiate Block Schedule provides a structure that optimizes each student’s high school learning experience to create an engaging and meaningful school day.

Students take four 80-minute classes per day, which allows students to complete an entire course in one semester (instead of a full academic year) and closely resembles a college schedule.

Advantages of Block Scheduling

Improved Teaching and Learning

With 80-minute classes, more time is available to develop key concepts, incorporate creativity into instruction, and implement a variety of classroom activities that address different learning styles. The longer block time allows for in-depth study, such as individual student projects, peer collaboration, and one-on-one work between teachers and students, which leads to improved content retention.

Ability to Focus Attention

The block schedule allows students to focus on only four classes each semester, exploring each one in greater depth. At the end of each semester, students only need to prepare for four exams. Because teachers only teach three classes in each term, they have increased time to meet regularly with their students for individualized help.

More Course Offerings

Courses are often completed in one semester, allowing for more flexibility and options for electives. Students take more courses with the block schedule because they enroll in at least eight classes per year, instead of six or seven.

Stronger Interpersonal Relationships

The longer class periods allow for extra time with teachers which gives students a chance to develop deeper interpersonal relationships with them, which is integral to academic success. Teachers get to know students more personally and can adapt lessons to their interests.

Care of the Individual

We know students need more than just academic support. At SUA, one of our Core Values is Care of the Individual because we understand the importance of helping students grow academically, socially, and emotionally. A block schedules allows students to challenge themselves while also managing a school-life balance, resulting in happier, successful students.
