A team of seven students from St Ursula Academy received a 2013 Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam Initiative Grant to develop their Invention called a Pill Dispensing Organizational System. They will present their invention at the EurekaFest at MIT June 19-23, 2013.
The team members are: Jessica Cetnar, Danielle Hunt, Beth Ann Less, Caroline Lewandowski, Gabrielle Mancy, Neera Martin, and Madison Scott. Their advisor is teacher Jackie Kane.
These students met this past summer to create an invention and write a grant. The team is one of 16 InvenTeams selected from a nationwide pool of candidates. Justin Lai, Invention Education Associate wrote, “Competition was keen among the finalists, but your team’s proposal surfaced as one with considerable inventive potential. We applaud your team’s impressive organizational skill in developing a strong proposal early in the school year and your commitment to working on a challenging invention project over the next nine months.”
Although the invention development is funded, funds to travel to MIT next June will be raised by the students and through future donations.
According the MIT website, “The InvenTeam initiative, created by the Lemelson-MIT Program, offers an unparalleled opportunity for high school students to cultivate their creativity and experience invention. InvenTeam students rely on inquiry and hands-on problem solving as they apply lessons from science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to develop invention prototypes. Interactive, self-directed learning coupled with STEM curricula are essential for experiencing invention. Students learn to work in teams, while collaborating with intended users of their inventions. They partner with professionals in their communities to enrich their experiences. Most of all, students learn to move forward through challenges and celebrate "Eureka!" moments.” http://web.mit.edu/inventeams/about.html
