Sydney Czerniakowski Toledo, Ohio Saint Ursula Academy/University of Toledo
When Sydney was researching orphanages and children around the world, she found a spark that "touched my heart". She decided to focus on children in Africa who are in need of clothing. Sydney developed a project that turns pillowcases into dresses. This material and design is both sturdy and lightweight for children in the hot temperatures of Africa, but it also is an easy design which Sydney could use her sewing skills to teach others to make. Sydney made a video of her project, including information on the children in Africa and how people can help, and a brochure with dress design instructions. She then collected donated fabric and embellishments, gathered her volunteers and made 200 dresses! Sydney donated extra fabric and instructions to her high school's fashion class and club who have committed to taking on this project for years to come. "I learned so many things from this project that will benefit me for life!"
