The St. Ursula Academy Varsity Dance Team traveled to Orlando, FL, recently for the National Dance Team Championship, hosted by the Universal Dance Association (UDA). The team qualified for the championship this past summer while attending a summer camp through UDA. Several hundred teams throughout the United States traveled to the competition, which was held at various venues at ESPN's Wide World of Sports on January 31 and February 1.
The team made it past the first two rounds of competition in the highly competitive Small Varsity (14 or less dancers) category's Jazz and Pom divisions, beating out over 140 other teams. The team made it to the Final round of competition for each, which is an almost unheard of accomplishment for a first year team. They placed 13th in Pom Finals and 10th in Jazz Finals.
The team, coached by Erin Parseghian, consists of Seniors Lexi Hicks, Caroline Kelley, Maddy Walsh and Melissa Wittenmyer, Juniors Tegan Hack, Lexi Miehls, and Chandler Riley, Sophomores Caitlin Beak, Olivia Hicks, Lexi Keith, Molly McGuire, and Sarah Torchia, and Freshmen Emma Kalucki, Kate Myers, and Abby Reece.
The SUA Dance Team won the OASSA State Championship in Jazz and Pom in 2014 and will compete in the 2015 State Championship in the coming weeks.
